5 simple steps to turn your
HOME OFFICE
into a biophilic haven

The impact of our workspace

Currently, 22% of the U.S. workforce—roughly 32 to 35 million people—works remotely or in a hybrid setup. And that doesn’t even account for those who use a home office in addition to their company’s workspace. When you consider that we spend one-third of our lives working, the importance of a physically and mentally healthy work environment becomes undeniable.

Your surroundings can either support or undermine your mental balance. A thoughtfully designed space has the power to elevate your mood, regulate stress and blood pressure levels, and directly impact your productivity.

  1. Optimal Furniture Placement

To find the best layout for your furniture, first consider the nature of your space.

Do you have a window overlooking the outdoors—whether it's rolling clouds, a nearby tree canopy, a pond, or a quiet garden? If so, position your desk to capture that glimpse of nature.

If an outdoor view isn't an option, there are still plenty of ways to bring the calming essence of the outdoors inside.

2. Strategic Color Choices

Color is a powerful tool.

It evokes emotional responses and influences mood, and when used strategically, it can significantly enhance your productivity and creative thinking. Do you lack focus and crave calm? Are you often exhausted and in need of a fresh, energizing atmosphere? Or do you struggle with anxiety?

I help my clients find the ideal, healthy color scheme tailored precisely to their personality and daily needs.

3. Natural Materials and Surfaces

The look, feel, and even scent of natural materials—like stone, rich or vintage woods, wool, leather, and, of course, plants—can profoundly support your work life.

By curating a composition that reflects your personal taste, we bring authentic elements of nature directly into the space.

In biophilia, we talk about implementing nature in the space. A well-designed environment optimizes your ability to stay inspired, curious, and alert, while also offering a grounding effect when you feel anxious.

The ideal office space adapts to both your practical and neurological needs.

4. Health-promoting furniture

We're al spending an enormous amount of time sitting down and staring at the computer screen.

A big part of a healthy office environment is an ergonomic chair, a sturdy table with the right height, and an appropriate size and height of your office equipment, including the computer and the screen(s).

Don't save on the important things!

And if space and budget allows, create a relaxing break nook for yourself!

5. Nature-Inspired Décor Elements

Things that mimic nature and evoke the natural world are a crucial part of the biophilic toolkit, which is where décor plays a pivotal role.

Right now, there is a massive shift toward organic shapes, natural materials, animal-inspired patterns, and innovative textiles.

By cherry-picking from these abundant offerings—perhaps mixing items with rich patina and character alongside refreshing, contemporary pieces—we can create a space that is uniquely yours.

During my recent trend watching, I found countless beautiful and creative examples, ranging from elegant to wild and witty. Let me show you a few of my favorites:
